Overview
Google's Conversions API lets you send conversion data to Google Ads directly, improving the accuracy of your conversion measurement. LayerFive's Google CAPI Setup Wizard guides you through connecting your data in a few steps.
The wizard handles two things, and you can set up either one, both, or just one of them:
-
Enhance your purchase conversion — improves the accuracy of your existing purchase tracking
-
Sync funnel events — sends earlier funnel events (add to cart, checkout started, etc.) to Google Ads
Both steps are optional and independent, so you can configure only what you need.
Before you begin: Your Google Ads account must already be connected to LayerFive. If it isn't, connect it first under Administration → Integrations. If the wizard tells you Google Ads isn't connected, it will direct you to the integration screen.
The Setup Steps
The wizard moves through five stages, shown in a progress indicator at the top:
Prerequisites → Enhance purchase (optional) → Sync funnel events (optional) → Review → Done
Step 1: Prerequisites & Terms
This screen confirms your Google Ads account is ready for Conversions API setup.
You'll see:
-
A step-by-step instruction list for confirming your Google Ads setup
-
A live check showing whether your Customer Data Terms have been accepted in Google Ads
If the terms check shows a ✗: You won't be able to continue until Customer Data Terms are accepted in your Google Ads account. Accept them in Google Ads, then click Re-check. This is the only item that blocks you from proceeding.
Other status information shown on this screen is informational only and won't prevent you from continuing.
Click Next once prerequisites are met.
Step 2: Enhance Your Purchase Conversion (Optional)
This step improves the accuracy of your existing purchase conversion tracking by sending additional verified purchase data to Google Ads.
What you'll do:
-
Select your purchase conversion action. The wizard lists your Google Ads conversion actions and highlights the one categorized as a purchase. If you have more than one purchase action (some accounts do — for example, a separate Shopping-app purchase), you'll need to pick the correct one explicitly. The wizard won't auto-select for you, because only you know which is the right one.
-
Confirm the required checkboxes. Before continuing, you'll confirm a short checklist about how your Google Ads conversion is set up. These confirmations matter — they ensure the data LayerFive sends is actually received by Google.
Most important confirmation: Make sure your conversion uses the Google Ads API method. If your conversion is set to use the Google tag or Google Tag Manager in Google's interface instead, the data LayerFive sends will be silently dropped — meaning your setup will appear complete but no enhanced data will actually flow. Double-check this one carefully.
If no conversion actions appear: You'll need to create a native Google Ads purchase conversion first, then return and re-check.
To skip this step, click Skip this step.
Step 3: Sync Funnel Events (Optional)
This step sends earlier-funnel events — like add to cart and checkout started — to Google Ads, giving Google more signal to optimize your campaigns.
What you'll see:
The wizard suggests funnel events based on your actual data from the last 30 days. For each event, you'll see how many visitors triggered it, how many went on to convert, and a suggested value (pre-filled, and fully editable).
The suggested values are estimated from your average order value and the likelihood that each event leads to a purchase. You can adjust any value before continuing.
About the suggested values: These are estimates based on your last 30 days of data. If your store processes orders in multiple currencies, the average order value used in these estimates can be skewed higher than reality. Review the suggested values and adjust them before continuing — they're meant as a starting point, not a fixed number.
For each event you want to sync, you'll either:
-
Map it to an existing Google Ads action, or
-
Create a new action directly from the wizard
If your Google Ads account doesn't allow actions to be created automatically: The wizard will provide manual instructions for creating the needed actions in Google Ads, then let you continue once they're set up.
To skip this step, click Skip this step.
Step 4: Review & Activate
This screen shows a combined summary of everything you've set up:
-
Your purchase conversion enhancement (from Step 2, if completed)
-
Your funnel events (from Step 3, if completed)
Each row shows its target Google Ads action and how the data is sent.
Review the summary, then click Activate.
If you see an error after activating:
A required confirmation wasn't checked — you'll be returned to Step 2 to complete it
A selected action no longer exists in Google Ads — you'll be returned to the relevant step to choose a different one
Resolve the flagged item and activate again.
Step 5: Done
Once activated, you'll see a confirmation that your Google Conversions API is live, along with a summary of your activated configuration.
From this point, LayerFive automatically uploads your conversion data to Google Ads on a regular schedule (approximately every 20 minutes).
Editing Your Setup Later
You can return to the wizard at any time to add or change events without disturbing your existing setup. For example, you can add a single new funnel event or swap one purchase action for another, and your other mappings stay intact.
When you re-enter the wizard, it picks up your current configuration — you won't need to recreate actions you've already set up.
Common Questions
Do I have to set up both enhancement and funnel events? No. The two middle steps are independent and skippable. You can set up only purchase enhancement, only funnel events, or both — whatever fits your needs.
My setup completed but I'm not seeing data in Google Ads. What should I check? The most common cause is the conversion method. Confirm in Google Ads that your conversion action uses the Google Ads API method, not the Google tag or GTM. If it's set to the wrong method, Google silently drops the data even though LayerFive is sending it correctly.
The suggested values look way too high. Is something wrong? Probably not — this usually happens when your store processes orders in multiple currencies, which can inflate the average order value used in the estimate. Review and adjust the values manually before activating.
Why does my Google Ads account need to be connected first? The wizard reads your existing conversion actions and account settings directly from Google Ads. Without that connection, it can't show you the right options. Connect Google Ads under Administration → Integrations before starting.
