Overview

Custom Dimensions allow users to create grouped classifications for advertising and analytics data using custom rules and conditions.

These dimensions help organize raw platform data into meaningful business groupings for advanced reporting and performance analysis.

Common use cases include:

  • Campaign Type Grouping

  • Brand Segmentation

  • Funnel Classification

  • Audience Categorization

  • Product Grouping

  • Regional Mapping


Accessing Custom Dimensions

Steps

  1. Navigate to Performance Reports

  2. Click Custom Dimensions

The Custom Dimensions page opens.


Custom Dimensions List

The main page displays all created custom dimensions.

Each entry includes:

Column Description
Name Custom dimension title
Source Connected advertising source
Underlying Dimension Base reporting dimension
Attribute Type Attribute used for grouping
Groups Created group names
Description Dimension description
Actions View, Edit, Delete actions


Creating a New Custom Dimension

To create a new custom dimension:

  1. Click Create New Dimension

  2. The Create Dimension Group page opens


Create Dimension Group Configuration

The configuration page contains multiple setup sections.


Step 1: Enter Basic Information

Required Fields

Title - Enter a unique custom dimension name.

Description - Provide a clear explanation of the custom grouping logic.


Step 2: Select Source

Choose one or more advertising platforms.

Supported sources may include:

  • Google Ads

  • Facebook Ads

  • TikTok Ads

  • Bing Ads


Multi-Source Support

Some dimension options vary depending on the selected sources.

Example:

  • Google Ads may support:

    • Account

    • Ads

    • Campaign

  • Facebook Ads may additionally support:

    • AdSet

    • Audience


Step 3: Select Dimension

Choose the reporting dimension that will be grouped.

Available dimensions may include:

Dimension Description
Account Advertising account level
AdSet Ad set grouping
Ads Individual advertisements
Audience Audience-based segmentation
Campaign Campaign-level grouping


Step 4: Select Attribute

Attributes define the specific field used for grouping logic.

Examples include:

Attribute Description
Account Id Unique account identifier
Account Name Account display name
Campaign Type Campaign category
Campaign Name Campaign title


Step 5: Create Groups

Groups define the custom classifications.

Each group contains:

  • Group Name

  • Logical Conditions

  • Operators

  • Values

Creating a Group

Steps

  1. Enter a group name

  2. Select condition logic:

    • AND

    • OR

  3. Add rules and conditions

  4. Save the configuration

Group Logic

Group logic determines how conditions are evaluated.

AND Logic

All conditions must match.

Example:

Campaign contains "Search"
AND
Campaign contains "Brand"

OR Logic

At least one condition must match.

Example:

Campaign contains "PMAX"
OR
Campaign contains "Shopping"

Available Operators

Custom Dimensions support multiple filtering operators.

Text Operators

Operator Description
Equal Exact match
Does not Equal Excludes exact match
Contains Partial text match
Does not Contain Excludes partial text
In List Matches multiple values
Matches Regex Regex pattern matching
Doesn’t Match Regex Excludes regex pattern

Null Operators

Operator Description
Is Null Value is null
Is not Null Value exists
Is Empty Empty string
Is not Empty Has content


Adding Conditions

Additional conditions can be added to a group.

Steps

  1. Click Add Condition

  2. Select:

    • Operator

    • Value

  3. Configure logic using:

    • AND

    • OR

Conditions

Campaign Type Contains "PMAX"

Campaign Type Contains "Performance Max"

Multiple Groups

A single custom dimension can contain multiple groups.

Example:

Group Purpose
PMAX Performance Max campaigns
Search Search campaigns
Video Video campaigns
Shopping Shopping campaigns

Removing Groups

Groups can be removed using the delete icon beside each group section.


Saving the Dimension

After completing all required fields:

  1. Click Save

  2. The custom dimension becomes available across reporting modules


Viewing Custom Dimensions

The Custom Dimensions page displays all saved dimensions.

Available Actions

Action Description
View Open the dimension configuration
Edit Modify grouping logic
Delete Remove the dimension

Editing Custom Dimensions

Users can modify:

  • Group logic

  • Operators

  • Conditions

  • Sources

  • Attributes

  • Group names

Steps

  1. Click Edit

  2. Update configuration

  3. Save changes


Deleting Custom Dimensions

Deleting a dimension permanently removes it from reporting usage.


Important Notes

  • Existing reports using the dimension may be affected

  • Deleted dimensions cannot be recovered

  • Ensure reports are updated before deletion


Best Practices

  • Use descriptive group names

  • Keep grouping logic simple and maintainable

  • Avoid overlapping conditions

  • Test regex conditions carefully

  • Use OR logic for broad classification

  • Use AND logic for precise filtering

Campaign Classification

Group campaigns by:

  • PMAX

  • Search

  • Shopping

Funnel Segmentation

Classify campaigns into:

  • TOF

  • MOF

  • BOF

Regional Reporting

Create custom region groups such as:

  • North America

  • Europe

  • APAC

Brand vs Non-Brand Reporting

Separate campaigns into:

  • Brand

  • Non-Brand


Troubleshooting

Save Button Disabled

Verify all required fields are completed:

  • Title

  • Description

  • Source

  • Dimension

  • Attribute

  • Group Conditions


Group Not Matching Data

Check:

  • Operator selection

  • Exact spelling

  • Regex formatting

  • Source compatibility


Missing Dimensions

Some dimensions only appear for supported sources.

Example:

  • Audience may not exist for all platforms

Incorrect Grouping Results

Review:

  • AND vs OR logic

  • Condition overlap

  • Attribute selection
